Kristian Glass - Do I Smell Burning?

Explicit is better than Implicit

I’ve virtually never regretted erring on the side of being more explicit about my expectations and my intents.

Sometimes you’ll think you don’t need to because everyone’s on the same page. It’s all too easy to be wrong about what others think or how they’ll react (see the Curse of Knowledge). I’ve learnt that the hard way more than once.

Sometimes it’s tough because you aren’t sure about your expectations and intents. Trying to be more explicit can force you to think more about them, and either become clearer, or at least more comfortable with the bits you aren’t clear about.

Sometimes it’s tough because you’re avoiding conflict. Avoiding it won’t make it go away, and it’s often better dealt with sinner rather than later.

So be explicit, signal your intent, clarify your expectations!
