As per 2021, some things I read in 2022 (albeit written up nearly two years later), along with some brief opinions/recommendations.
All categorisations are approximate at best and will probably cause some kind of contention.
Fiction
- Charles Stross’s Quantum of Nightmares - while I don’t think I love the New Management series as much as the early Laundry Files with Bob, I’m still very much enjoying them!
- Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Widow - very fun
- Laura Steven’s The Society for Soulless Girls - saw it on TikTok, really enjoyed it!
- Garon Whited’s Nightlord series (1-3) - while it’s a bit of a power fantasy, I enjoyed it as a “management fantasy” - the protagonist has the time, resources, and trusted competent associates to be able to execute on all of his side projects, and it turns out that I quite enjoy that fantasy(!)
- Tamsyn Muir’s Nona the Ninth - I really enjoyed Gideon and Harrow, but I struggle when characters had multiple names and this is a common theme across the series. Combine that with amnesia/hidden identity subplots, and confusion over whether this is an extended introduction or a book in its own right, and this was easily my least favourite of the three, but I’m still enjoying the series and looking forward to the next
Non-Fiction
Work
- Gerben van den Berg and Paul Pietersma’s Key Management Models: The 75+ Models Every Manager Needs to Know - definitely an interesting reference
Life
- Derek Sivers’s Anything You Want: 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur
- Séamas O’Reilly’s Did Ye Hear Mammy Died? - poignant and funny in equal measures
- Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe’s Parenting Hell - a gift from a friend upon my becoming a parent, I enjoyed this more than I expected, and it nicely balanced humour with thoughtfulness
